
| 16th Biennial Congress of Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia (ATCSA), Bangkok (November 16 - 19, 2003) | |

Thailand is hosting the 16th Biennial Congress of the Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia (ATCSA) which will be held in Bangkok from November 16-19 in 2003. The Bangkok Organizing Committee Chairman Narong Rodwarna, M.D. accompanied by Dr. Prinya Sakiyalak, recently visited the Philippine Heart Center to personally invite PATACSI members to participate in the upcoming congress. 4 teams of the Thai organizing committee have been going around the rest of the asia-pacific region to promote the convention and to personally invite surgeons from countries in the region. A dinner meeting at the Shangrila Hotel Garden Café provided important practical pointers for our own preparation for the biennial congress. Dr. Avenilo Aventura, Organizing Committee Chairman for the 2005 ATCSA congress in Manila assured them of the active participation of Philippine cardiothoracic surgeons in 16th congress. The deadline for clinical abstracts submission has been reset for September 30, 2003. Oral, video and poster presentations are accepted. Deadline for early registration will be up October 15, 2003. | 8th Annual PATACSI-Bayer Research Forum | |

The 8th PTACSI -Bayer Research forum was held in the Philippine Heart Center Medical Arts Building on July 19, 2003. The winners were: 1st place Basic Research Category: Dr. Gregorio Bergonio, PHC, for his research on "Effect of medroxyprogesterone acetate on the prevention of post-pericardiotomy adhesions", 2nd place: Dr. Ronnie Cacas, PHC, "Preservation of tissue heterografts: comparison between normal saline treated and glutaraldehyde". For the Clinical category, 1st place was awarded to Dr. Darwin P. Corpuz of UPPGH for his paper on "Ultrasound in occult penetrating cardiac trauma: a preliminary report. 2nd place went to Alexander Benedict Lat of the UST hospital for his research on the "Impact of modified ultrafiltration in adult cardiac surgery". The remaining time was dedicated to free-paper presentation. | |

As part of the continuing outreach program of the PATACSI, the 9th Biomedis Annual Regional Postgraduate course was held in Waterfront Hotel, Cebu City with the theme "Postoperative Critical Care in Common Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery." The team was headed by Dr.Adrian Manapat, PATACSI president and Dr. Aquileo Rico, chairman of the Committee on Continuing Surgical Education. Other lecturers were: Dr. Eduardo Bautista, Dr. Camilo Pada, Dr. Gisel Catalan, Dr. Christopher C. Cheng and Dr. Nelson Lee. Cebu local surgeons were represented by Dr. James Guardiario, Dr. Arnold Tan, Dr. Peter Y. Mancao and Dr. Monico O Perez. | |

| Clinical Practice Guidelines for common thoracic and cardiovascular surgical procedures | |

As a fruit of labor from the recent workshop done on "Clinical practice guideline development and clinical appraisal" which was held in the Glaxo compound at Chino Roces Avenue, Makati on March 1, 2003, the society has started to develop local guidelines for common procedures in three disciplines of our subspecialty. Dr. Aquileo Rico heads a task group developing practice guidelines on Vascular Access for Dialysis. Dr. Eduardo Bautista's group will deal with the management of TB Pericarditis, while Dr. Camilo Pada will steer discussions on the management of Solitary Pulmonary Nodules. The proposed practice guidelines will be presented during the Annual Clinical Convention to be held as part of the PCS Congress this coming December 2003. |
